Ramadan 2026 starts in February

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. It is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community, observed as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and sinful behavior. The fast is broken each day at sunset with a meal called Iftar and begins before dawn with Suhoor.

The significance of Ramadan goes beyond physical fasting. It is a time for spiritual growth, where Muslims strengthen their faith and deepen their connection with Allah through increased prayer and recitation of the Quran. The month serves as an opportunity for self-discipline, teaching patience, gratitude, and self-restraint. By experiencing hunger and thirst, Muslims develop empathy for those who are less fortunate, fostering a greater sense of compassion.

Charity and generosity play a vital role during Ramadan. Muslims are encouraged to give to the needy through Zakat (obligatory charity) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity). Acts of kindness and helping others are emphasized, reinforcing the values of selflessness and goodwill. Ramadan also marks the month in which the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), making it a spiritually significant time for increased recitation and study of the holy book.

In addition to fasting and prayer, Ramadan strengthens the sense of community and unity among Muslims. Families and friends gather for meals, and mosques host special night prayers known as Taraweeh. It is a time of togetherness, where people come closer to one another through shared devotion and worship.

The month concludes with Eid al-Fitr, a joyous festival of gratitude and celebration marking the end of fasting. It is a day of feasting, giving gifts, and spreading happiness. Ultimately, Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food and drink; it is a period of renewal, purification, and striving to become a better person in both faith and character.
