About Us
Learn more about the OMC
The OMC Journey
Born from the 2001 Oldham disturbances, the Oldham Mosques’ Council emerged after severe unrest that heightened tensions and damaged trust between residents, youths, and police, leading to Oldham being labelled a divided borough. Key individuals have since rebuilt community understanding.
OMC review
Between 2022 and 2023, Oldham Mosques Council reviewed and updated its constitution to reflect modern governance standards and evolving community needs, after which an Executive Committee was unanimously elected in June 2023 for a three-year term.
Core Mission
Oldham Mosques Council was established to unify Oldham’s mosques, supporting Muslim communities in expressing concerns, tackling shared strategic challenges, and building constructive relationships with other faith groups and partner agencies within a safe, collaborative inclusive environment.

Volunteer Led
Mosques are typically overseen by volunteer-led management committees who shoulder a wide range of responsibilities.

OMC Aim
Oldham Mosques Council was created with a core mission to provide a unified voice for Oldham’s mosques.

Mosque Funding
Most Mosques are self-funded and rely heavily on voluntary donations from their congregations. As a result, they are continually exploring ways to increase and diversify their income in order to remain sustainable.

Update
New Leadership Elected for OMC
On Sunday, 9 June 2023, the Oldham Mosques’ Council (OMC) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) under the revised constitution at the Millennium Centre. Representatives from 28 masjids came together to elect a new leadership body.
The meeting provided an opportunity to review the organisation’s progress, discuss future priorities, and implement structural changes aimed at strengthening engagement and service to the wider community.
We were grateful for the strong interest shown by those willing to take on leadership responsibilities within the OMC. With renewed energy and a shared sense of purpose, the newly elected body is committed to serving the community in accordance with the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
“The most beloved people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others.” He also said: “Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock.”
Inspired by these teachings, we pray that Allah swt grants us sincerity, wisdom, and strength as we strive to fulfil our responsibilities and serve our community.
